Why Interior Features Trump Ride Quality & Engine PerformanceIt used to be Detroit would unveil its new models every fall with all the fanfare of a royal coronation. It was an exciting time. The new Chevys looked completely different from the Fords, and they looked completely different from the Dodges. Each model had its own unique design and features. Features had to do mostly with engine size and performance. The interior, while emphasized, took a back seat to how sexy the design was, how good the ride was and how fast it would go. Those were the days of the bottomless gas pump at fifteen cents a gallon. If you had the money for a Cadillac (nobody drove a Mercedes-Benz in those days), you really didn’t care how many times you’d have to fill up on the way to Aunt Martha’s for Thanksgiving dinner. There was always plenty of cheap gas available. There was a full service gas station on every corner with an actual service station attendant that would fill your tank, check your oil and even wash your windows. Those days are long gone and so is the advertising and design that made each new car model unique.

I don’t know about you, but to me, almost every sedan built in the last twenty years is about the same size, looks the same and has the sexiness of a wet dishrag. The contours are the same and the same color of silver seems to be the standard. The headlights and signal lights must all come from the same factory. They all get you from point A to point B, but the ride looks pretty boring. Up until recently, the gas mileage wasn’t a huge deal. Most Japanese and American compact sedans had about the same average mileage. All the engines were about the same size and the average new car buyer didn’t give one whit as to what new innovation was lurking under the hood. Yeah, it had an engine and it moved the car. That was about all that mattered besides the price. Buying a new car these days has all the excitement of picking out a new refrigerator.
