Start looking for a gas station when the tank’s half empty, and fill it again. If a highway is closed due to icing while you are on it, you will probably be parked there until the temperature rises. I spent a very memorable night parked on I84, with many other cars and trucks, until the sun rose the next morning! You need to be able to idle the engine and warm up the passenger compartment once in a while. Also, the windows and doors freeze in an ice storm if you can’t keep the vehicle warm.4. If you get stuck and have to run the engine to keep warm, check outside periodically and clear any drifts building up around your exhaust pipe. carbon monoxide can build up.4. Sure, you’re going to print out directions, but also bring a current map of every state you’re driving through. Accidents, traffic, and ice can cause road closures, and a map is essential for plotting alternate routes. The kid working at the Sheetz probably can’t tell you how to get home!5. Don’t rely on a GPS or a cell phone. They often don’t work reliably in mountainous areas.
