You will be shocked.In this economic climate, most people are finding it extremely difficult to find the money to purchase new vehicles, but some are going out of their way to be environmentally friendly and marketers have picked up on this profitable niche market. So what is the benefit of having a hybrid in most cases retailing $7,000 north of the equivalent non-hybrid? Let’s look at the Lexus GS450h as an example. Apart from being far too expensive for even the richer portion of the population, a GS350, for example, could be had for over $10,000 less and will emit similar amounts of carbon dioxide. Surely a few more mpg in the city and a worse highway mpg won’t justify that price hike! In fact, even with the small amount of money saved on fuel on the GS450h, it will take well over a decade to recuperate the cost of the hybrid, not taking into account the need to replace batteries for a couple of thousand dollars by that time.
