Most of us already know that gasoline-electric hybrid power is extremely fuel efficient. But just imagine what would happen if gasoline use was replaced by E85 ethanol, which is a mostly renewable fuel, in these increasingly popular vehicles? Some researchers believe that if only 5
percent of the entire vehicle fleet in the United States was driven by hybrids working on E85 fuel, the country’s oil imports would drop from about 7.5 billion barrels per year to about 150 million barrels each year. For an example, Ford created an E85 Escape plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) to further prove these ideas. As many people understand, extended electric range provided by a PHEV’s larger battery pack and its ability to use electricity from the grid means zero-emission motoring for longer periods of time. Longer trips in PHEVs can often achieve 100 miles per gallon or more! With this replacement of E85, your result is a truly green car. However, ethanol is a more unpredictable fuel than gasoline and this creates issues with evaporative discharges. That simply means that getting a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle certification, which many hybrids have achieved, is more difficult with an E85 hybrid. Since most hybrids run on electric power only part of the time, there are more difficulties with their internal combustion engine’s evaporative vacuum structure. More extreme evaporative system technologies are the key to overcoming this challenge, but will people ever be able to invent a truly zero-emission system on a car? Truly, only time will tell.
