The BMW Z10 is Still Moving Forward

These are challenging days for high-end performance automakers such
as BMW. This is apparent as BMW has red flagged and likely stalled
the M1 Homage (which drew and wowed crowds at Villa d’Este in 2008)
and the Z9 two-seater (which was to be derived from the four door CS

show car seen at the Shanghai Auto Show in 2007).

However, development work on the mid-engined BMW Z10 is continuing!
The car will likely be available as a coupe and a roadster, and it will
offer more interior room than a Porsche 911.

The target weight for the Z10 is 3300 lbs. When first proposed,
it was to have a turbo charged V8 engine. However, with increases
in fuel prices and uncertain economic times, BMW is now looking
at the twin-turbo 3-liter straight six-cylinder engine which will closely
resemble the next M3’s power of 450 hp and 350 lb. ft. of torque. The
transmission will be an eight-speed duel-clutch unit.

It is also a rumored that BMW is considering a V6 cylinder engine
as such would be more compact and lighter than the current straight
6-cylinder. However, BMW must consider how purists will react
to such an “unconventional” engine.

Some possible cutting edge elements of the Z10 include an aluminum
carbon fiber body, magnesium chassis parts, and a compact hybrid
system that has an integrated AC motor/generator and lithium-ion
batteries. A thermal management system would improve efficiency
by preheating lubricants using the heat from the exhaust system.
Additionally, the car’s ride height will be controlled to reduce lift
and improve aerodynamics.

The Z10 will not be available until 2014 or 2015. It will be priced
above the M5 in the $110,000 price range.

Look for an even more radical version of the Z10 at this years’
Frankfurt Auto Show.
