Many people are considering ditching their gas-powered vehicles in exchange for an electric car. One reason is they are cost-effective. For example, there would be little or no money spent on gas. The majority of car owners, who drive on a daily basis, spend thousands of dollars a year
on gasoline. Another factor is the tax benefits that electric car buyers receive from the federal government. Then there are then there are the environmental benefits that electric cars have. For instance, they do not emit any pollutants, which should help the quality of the air we breathe. Additional benefits of electric cars are that they are easier to maintain and produce less noise. On average, a family of four living in the US spends nearly three thousand dollars a year on gasoline for their automobiles. In addition to gas, they also have to spend money on oil for the engine. An electric car would eliminate these expenses, since it is powered by its battery. Also, it may be less expensive to maintain an electric car, since it only contains one moving component, compared to over a dozen moving components found in the engine of a gas-powered vehicle. It is true that it costs electricity to power the battery in an electric car, but the costs would be less. Consider this: let’s say you have an electric car with a battery that holds a charge for 40 miles. The average residential home in the U.S. spends almost 12 cents per Kilowatthour in May of 2009. If you drive 40 miles it would cost you roughly $1.60, which translates to 4 cents a mile. Now let’s say you have a gas-powered car that gets 30 mpg. Let’s also say that gas costs $3 per gallon.
