Getting a flu vaccination is more complicated this year, as the federal government rushes to get out a vaccine against the Type A strain, or H1N1, or more commonly - swine flu.

Officials with Terrebonne General Medical Center said that people 12 and older can receive the seasonal flu vaccine at TGMC’s OutReach Center in Southland Mall.

The OutReach Center will be giving flu shots on most weekdays in September until the end of October.

“Flu shots are available without a doctor’s order; however, if this is your first time, please consult with your physician,” said Rhonda Alford marketing director for TGMC.

Flu shots at the OutReach Center cost $25. For information, call the OutReach Center at 858-7020.

Kathy Hebert, a spokeswoman for Ochsner St. Anne Hospital in Raceland, said the hospital has a Health Fair scheduled from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 3. The Raceland hospital will give free flu shots to the first 200 people to sign up, in addition to free health screenings.

Officials with Thibodaux Regional Medical Center said the hospital is not offering flu vaccinations to anyone but its employees.

Nicholls State University has a flu-vaccination clinic scheduled for Sept. 28 and 29 in the Student Union on the Thibodaux campus. The vaccination costs $30 for those 18 and older.

The Terrebonne Council on Aging is taking names of clients wanting the vaccine and will begin offering vaccinations from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in Chauvin. The Montegut, Shady Acres and Schriever senior centers have yet to schedule dates when the centers will be offering vaccinations.

Charlene Rodriguez, executive director of the Lafourche Council on Aging, said the agency is offering a health fair where local residents can receive vaccinations for those 60 and over.

“I’m hoping for some time in October,” she said.

Some local drug stores are offering the vaccine. The drug stores will bill Medicare direct if the person has Medicare Part B.

Walgreen’s is offering vaccines from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays at a cost of $24.99. CVS Pharmacies is offering the vaccine from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 8. Local Rite-Aid employees said the local stores are expecting to have the vaccine available by the beginning of October.

While the national chains are offering the vaccine, some locally owned pharmacies are offering the injections also.

“We are certified to give the shots and we’re just waiting to get the vaccine, said Lloyd Duplantis of Lloyd’s Remedies in Gray. “We will take whatever the insurance pays. If there’s no insurance, the cost is probably going to be $30.”

Wal-Mart is having flu clinics scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 12 and 13. The vaccines cost $28.

Target, 1727 Martin Luther King Blvd., Houma, has the vaccine, and a trained technician will administer the vaccine upon request at the pharmacy. The vaccine costs $24.

Some local doctors are offering flu vaccines in their office, including doctors at Chabert Medical Center.

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has no date for when flu vaccines will be delivered to the local health units, but they have a list and are taking names of people who want them. The vaccines are available to everyone, but costs will vary.

While many local sites are offering flu vaccinations, the swine-flu vaccine is expected to be offered locally when it arrives.

Kathleen Sebellieu, the Health and Human Services secretary, told Congress the Food and Drug Administration approved and licensed a H1N1 vaccine Sept. 15.

A choice between “TIV” and a “LAIV” vaccine is available. The most common will be the LAIV, which can be given to a larger percent of the population. TIV is licensed for use in persons with high-risk conditions. The decision should be made by a family physician.
