Safe Ideas and Fun Activities for Winter Road

Road Trips for the PreparedHaving grown up in Michigan for half of my life, I know that driving in winter conditions can be treacherous. However, there are some general precautions that can be taken to avoid accidents and other problems. So, here are some of those ideas. There are also some ideas included here for what you can do for activities on road trips or places to go during the winter.

One: The first of these is to stay off the road if you can. I know that this isn’t always possible with work, daycare, school, etc. The thing is, if you can do it just stay home. The stress, other drivers, and possibly losing your car in the process (like I did once!) are not worth it.

Two: Kitty litter. Seriously. This is actually one of the best things to have on you in bad weather. There are many other things that you may even have around the house that can be used. Have a fireplace? Keep a bucket of ashes in your trunk. They work just as well, although they may be a bit messier. Other good things include salt, sand, or other products you can buy at the store. It’s always good to have something like this in your car when you are on a trip in the winter just in case it gets icy or you need to get out of a small ditch.

Three: Take an extra blanket. Maybe two! You never know if you may have to walk somewhere to get help. This is not something a lot of people think about these days with the easy access cell phones give us to help or other aids we have in the car. However, if your car stops and you have no heat, it is always good to have something with you for keeping warm. This is the same for taking other extra types of clothing, boots, etc.

Four: Remember, even if you are a fantastic driver it’s still good to slow down if it gets nasty out. I have seen so many people drive the normal speed limit or over it even in bad weather. This is all around a bad idea. It’s better to arrive at your destination a little later than usual than to have an accident.
