Renewing My Breakdown Coverage with the AA

According to the AA, they are the UK’s number one provider of breakdown coverage. They certainly have flooded the market with advertisements. Their prices are reasonable, especially if you subscribe online and get that discount, and they cover most areas. It sounds ideal. Unfortunately, in my case, the reality of their service did not meet up with all of their great claims.

Here are my experiences and why I’m not renewing my breakdown cover with the AA.

Not long ago, my husband, children, and I were driving on the motorway when our car broke down. To be exact, the electrical controls went haywire and there was a puff and smoke started coming out of the column behind the steering wheel. We pulled over onto the hard shoulder as quickly as possible and called the AA.

We explained our situation, and were told that because we were in a vulnerable position with young children, we would be given high priority and someone would be with us within an hour, and that they would text us with updates until the rescue van arrived. To make a long story short, no one came within an hour and we received no texts. We had to call back multiple times. Each time we were assured and given “personal guarantees” that the recovery van would be with us within a certain time frame. Each time the allotted time passed without anyone coming or updating us on the situation. We spent hours by the side of the busy motorway.

What annoyed me the most about this situation was the dishonesty. They were blatantly lying to us. I understand that sometimes they are busy or don’t have anyone nearby, and that we will have to wait. However, I expect to be told that up-front, not repeatedly told that someone would be there…only to have no one show up.
