Pontiac G8 to Survive as Chevrolet Caprice

In a stark about-face - and in direct opposition to GM CEO Fritz Henderson’s comments on the topic - GM vice chairman Bob Lutz recently told Automobile Magazine that the Pontiac G8 would not be killed at the end of this year. Instead, the car will be rebadged and sold at Chevy dealerships as the Chevrolet Caprice. GM had previously announced that the entire Pontiac brand would cease production by the end of 2010.
The Caprice nameplate hasn’t been used in the U.S. since the 1996, when it was attached to a land barge. Whether buyers have favorable memories of the Caprice name remains to be seen.
Lutz also told Automobile that the Cadillac CTS-V coupe is on track for production and that he’d love to see a CTS-V wagon, too.
