Paint Touch-Up for Your Vehicle

Stop Rust and Deterioration of Your VehicleSo, you’re washing your car, and that spot of ”dirt” turns out to be a chip, nick, or ding in the paint itself. The dark area is actually rust! Do you panic? No! You spend about $10.00 and touch that rusty spot up in just a few steps, saving your vehicle from any further deterioration. First, you will need a minimal amount of supplies:
1. A few tiny paintbrushes, such as are sold in packages for kid’s craft projects.

2. Some form of sandpaper…for this purpose, I prefer ‘emery boards’ sold to file one’s nails. A package of the cheapest brown-colored ones are all that is necessary.
3. A product that changes rust to a good base for paint ["rust-changer']. This is sold by various names in the automotive-supply stores, or paint departments of places like Wal-Mart.. Consistency is like a thin paint, and it’s sold in small squeeze bottles.
4. A ‘touch-up’ bottle of the correct paint for your vehicle. To achieve this, you will need the make, model, and year of your vehicle. The paint will come in a bottle that looks a lot like a nail-polish bottle, complete with brush attached to the cap. It can be found in the automotive area of of most major stores, or in an automotive-supply store.
5. Rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs.
6. Newspapers and masking tape or painter’s tape.The first step is to remove most of the rust, while doing no further damage to the surrounding good finish. Depending on the size of the rusty area, you may need to shape the end of the emery board with scissors, or fold your sandpaper if you are using it, to a small point to get in there and sand. The gritty part will wear down quickly, so keep shaping/scissoring/refolding to keep a usable roughness. However, as per the instructions on the ‘rust changer’ you must leave a small amount of rust, so don’t keep going until you see things shine!
