Prominently displayed inside BMW’s new hall was a 1960 BMW 502 2.6 Luxus. In 1954, the 502 sedan became Germany’s first V-8-powered car. Its predecessor, the six-cylinder 501, was the company’s first new model after the war. Under the hood, the 502 has a pushrod aluminum 2.6-liter V-8 that makes 100 hp at 4800 rpm. Enlarged to 3.2 liters, the 502’s V-8 powered the famous and rare 507 roadster. In the 3100-pound 502, the engine provided a top speed of 100 mph making it one of the quicker sedans of its day. Known as the “baroque angel” because of its glitzy styling, the 502 at the show represents the pinnacle of BMW luxury circa 1960 and could be considered the great-grandfather of today’s 7-series.
