How to Save Money on Your Ohio Auto Insurance Premiums This Winter
Summer is slowly rolling to a close. You can’t turn around without bumping into
Winter should be for fun, not for spending too much money on your auto insurance!
another Back to School sale, and the kids are already moaning and groaning about the end of their vacation. Not only do you need to start getting ready for winter, your car does too-and that means making sure your Ohio auto insurance is up to the challenge! With the extra expenses that heating bills, gasoline (since no one wants to walk ANYWHERE in sub-zero temperatures!), winter coats and the never ending cycle of lost mittens and boots can rack up, it pays to know how to save. Your auto insurance is a great place to start.
The downside of driving on ice slick roads rather than the dependable asphalt you cruise on most of the summer is that you’re exponentially more likely to get into an accident. Aside from the obvious lack of traction you’re trying to deal with keeping your heater blasting, your fingers snugly covered in heavy duty gloves and the kids covered with blankets. Add to that the number of drivers that don’t understand the concept of slowing down when you can’t see more than two feet in front of your face in an ice storm and it’s easy to see why Ohio auto insurance claims climb dramatically from November to March. (You laugh, but I’ve actually watched someone pass me doing sixty down a highway in the middle of a blizzard. Needless to say, they were in the ditch less than a mile later.)
Keeping that in mind, the easiest way to keep your auto insurance rates from climbing through the roof is to take a driver safety course that offers a segment on winter driving, drive carefully and stay off the roadways altogether when the weather’s nasty. If you have to drive in the snow make sure your headlights are on and you’re traveling at safe speeds. It’s better to take an extra hour or two to get home because you’re doing thirty miles an hour down the Interstate than to not make it home at all.
Food for thought.
The other thing you want to do is bump up the safety features on your car and make sure you’re taking advantage of as many discounts on your insurance as possible. Winter tires can save you 5% or more on your premiums, as can parking your car in a garage rather than out on the street. Add in things like airbags and seatbelts to reduce your chances of being injured if you are in an accident and anti-lock brakes and you’re on the fast track to major savings on your Ohio car insurance rates this winter.
To recap:
1) Drive safe
2) Keep your car safe
3) Talk to your car insurance agent(s) about any discounts you might qualify for.
You might be surprised at how much you can save, so why wait? Contact your auto insurance provider today!
