My Trunk Leaks - Now What?

How to Replace a Leaking Trunk SealWe are fast approaching the time of the year when we pack our cars and go to grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving dinner. The kids are going into the back seat and the handcrafted cakes, casseroles and cookies are being stored in the trunk of the car. Gifts and prized treasures to share with the family are safely nestled between the pans and containers of food. With all of the family and their contents protected from wind and rain by the door and lid of the trunk, the family can go through wind, rain or snow on this annual holiday trip. If you get to Grandmother’s house and everything in the trunk is soaked, you have a BIG problem.

Your problem is probably that the rubber seals on your trunk have deteriorated and are no longer able to properly seal the edge of your trunk. The only solution is to replace the trunk weather seals. Here are 5 easy step to make this alteration.

1. Compare the old seal with the new one. Make sure that the shape is the same. Remember that old seals are flat and somewhat distorted. The new seal has spongy rubber that will compensate for any slight differences between the old shape and the new one. Make sure that you note which side of the weather strip that faces toward the trunk.

2. To remove the old seal you should apply liberal amounts of a glue release agent like Dent Out as you pull up the old weatherstripping. Make sure all old adhesive, debris and rubber is removed.

3. Check the trunk lid alignment and then run a bead of automotive glue like Miracle Glue along the inside groove as you install the weather strip.

4. Install the new weatherstrip by starting at the center about the lock cylinder and insert the new weatherstrip. Fold your strip in half and start with the half-way point. Make sure the outside and inside edges are tight and sealed.

5. Starting about 8 inches from the center to about 8 inches from the meeting point. carefully cut the ends squarely to match neatly together. Allow an extra 1/4 inch to overlap. Glue the two ends together and hold them together for a few moments and then insert them in the groove. Close and open your trunk a few times to be sure the seal is complete. carefully wipe up any excess glue.
