The Ford Focus used to be a small, compact car that was pretty unremarkable except for its bulbous appearance so different from other, more streamlined compacts. With the 2009 model, Ford has made changes not only to the body, but also to the interior and performance.

Focus’ exterior is the most obvious change for 2009, making use of more modern, classy lines for a more streamlined appearance than the early models. Ford introduced a coupe model last year and added stability control to the options list. Its front and rear fascias are sleeker and the fake fender vents are a thing of the past.

The performance has gotten an overhaul, too, including a new sport exhaust that increases the horsepower. To improve acceleration, the final drive ratio has been made shorter and stability control has been added. Only one engine is available in all trims, a 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder 140 horsepower that is very economical. With manual transmission, the Focus achieves 24mpg city and 35 highway for a combined 28 mpg with the manual transmission. The automatic transmission drops the fuel economy to a combines 33 mpg, still very economical and environmentally conscious.

All Focus models have six airbags that provide front and side impact safety for the driver and all passengers. Focus did well in crash tests, earning four out of five stars for protecting front seat occupants in head-on collisions. Front end impact protection earned it a perfect five star score but it ranked just three stars front and rear side impact protection. However, the IIHS ranked Focus “Good”, its highest rating, for front crash protection.

Focus has quick and responsive steering, a comfortable but unremarkable ride and average cabin noise when on the highway. The engine’s power is acceptable but not as impressive as other cars in this category although the fuel economy could make up for this shortcoming.
