Liquid Vs Powder Paint
Choosing the Best FinishWhen choosing a finish for your product it is important to understand the subtle difference between
liquid and powder based painting. Liquid paint was first used by our earliest ancestors some 40,000 years ago to draw pictograms on cave walls. Powder Coat is perhaps the most recent of finishing techniques first used in Australia around 1967.Liquid paint is typically more expensive than its powder counterpart because of the use of solvents, the need to primer parts, or multiple coats to achieve desired end product. Liquid paint is still the best choice when seeking a cosmetically appealing finish. It is important that rust, dust, and other contaminants are removed from the part prior to painting, but not as critical as with powder coating. Custom liquid paints are much easier to produce under a tight timeframe over powder as well, as it is just a matter of mixing the correct pigments to achieve the desired color.Liquid painting can be applied with a spray gun, spray can, brushed, rolled; there are dozens of tools in the industrial which can be used. Liquid is also the best finish for when the paint thickness is required to be extremely thin (1mil or less). Recently non-toxic or non-VOC (volatile organic compound) liquid paints have been manufactured to make liquid paint more environmentally friendly. VOCs are the second largest contributor to atmospheric pollution behind automobiles.Powder coating is quickly becoming the preferred choice in finishes. It is an environmentally friendly process as it does not use solvents and emits zero or near-zero VOCs. Powder coat is typically applied with a gun that electrostatically charges the powder as it is sprayed onto the part. The part is then put in an oven typically at about 450 degrees Fahrenheit and the powder is then melted to produce your finished surface.
