Leno Shows Electric Focus Hails from Europe

The battery-electric Focus to be used in the new Leno show’s “Green car Challenge” has been revealed, and it’s based on the European five-door Focus ST. Ford put the car together at its Dearborn headquarters in six weeks, tuning it on a track built in Michigan to simulate the course celebrity drivers will be competing on in Hollywood. Drew Barrymore will be the first such star in an electrified car when the segment premieres on this evening’s show.

The car is painted “Electric Orange” (heh) and features a 141-hp electric motor putting out 236 lb-ft of torque. A bundle of 98 lithium-ion battery cells are rated at 23 kWh and are said to be arranged so that the car has true 50/50 front/rear weight balance. We doubt the range will be tested very often, but Ford tells us the car is able to travel 80 miles on a charge. Track-oriented mods include a full roll cage, Recaro seats, and five-point harnesses. Front suspension is from a Euro Focus RS, while the rear is specifically tuned for the batteried Focus.
