A Highly Acidic SubjectNo two ways around it, battery acid is downright dangerous. Any leaking battery needs to be dealt with as quickly as possible. Should you discover one in your home or garage, here is how you deal with leaking battery stains.

Neutralizing the acid is the best way, if it’s done correctly. If the leaking battery stain is on fabric, the longer it sits, the harder it is to get rid of. What you need to effectively remove it is: baking soda, water, rubber gloves, laundry soap, and a washing machine.

Combine some baking soda with a little bit of water, enough to form a paste like consistency, and cover the soiled fabric. Let this set for approximately 2 hours. Launder the garment, sheets, towels, etc., as you ordinarily would, with regular laundry soap. Allow to air dry. Continue this process until you’re sure that the stains are gone. If the stain from the leaking battery still won’t go away, here’s something else you can try:

For this method of dealing with leaking battery stains, you will need some regular ammonia, water, dishwashing soap or laundry detergent (for delicates), white vinegar, rubber gloves, and a soft rag.

You will need to mix 1 cup of water with 2 tablespoons of the ammonia. Dip the rag in this solution and dab on the soiled area, saturating it well. Let this set for a few minutes, then wipe up with another soft, clean rag. Continue this process until you can no longer see the stain transferring to the clean cloth.

After this, if there’s still some of the stain remaining on your fabric, combine some laundry or dish soap with about eight ounces of tap water. Using the method above, saturate the stain with a clean, soft rag and allow soaking. Wash in the washing machine as normal and let the garment air dry. If a rusty, brownish colored stain is still on the garment, try the following method:

Combine one cup of water with one half cup of white vinegar. Saturate the soiled fabric or garment with this mixture and allow the garment to soak. Wash in washing machine as usual.
