Today’s vehicles generate plenty of friction and unharnessed friction is well, a waste of energy! What if the pumping action and friction of vehicle shock absorbers could be converted into electrical energy?
Most drivers seek the smoothest path when motoring down the road. Heavens knows, this is sometimes a challenging task especially in the northeastern part of the country! Driving on smooth road surfaces is easier on a vehicle and
it lessens the fiction and heat buildup in the suspension system.
Two companies are looking to harness the activity of shock absorbers to make electricity. After all, today’s vehicles with their GPS, NAV systems, power equipment, etc., etc. use large amounts of electricity.
The first patent applications for such electrical generation were actually submitted some 30 years ago. However, at the time, energy saving did not seem to be a front burner priority. Now, two companies are working to commercialize the concept of suspension electrical generation.
A Boston startup company called Levant Power Corporation was founded by newly minted MIT engineers whose GenShock product is currently undergoing the bumpy world of military testing. The company intends to follow up with applications for commercial heavy truck and possibly even hybrid vehicles.
The other company is Arizona-based Physics Lab that started out building a Progressive Automotive X-Prize contender in which it converted a late 80s Chevy Blazer into a 100 mpg plug-in hybrid. Regenerative shocks were just one of the waste-power harvesting concepts used on the hybrid. Physics Lab is working to bring its Regen-EV-Shocks to production as an aftermarket application.
Beginning with the same general premise, both companies’ designs are quite different. Levant envisions the GenShocks fitting inside or next to coil springs with only an electrical connection to transfer power to the vehicle. In this application, rather than squeezing oil through restrictor plate holes, it’s routed through a turbine wheel, gerotor pump, or some other spinning component that powers an electric generator.
