Just Kidding: Pontiac G8 Dead
Well, this is embarrassing: a week ago, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz told Automobile Magazine that the Pontiac G8 would survive as the Chevrolet Caprice. Now, Lutz writes on the GM FastLane blog that he was wrong and the G8 is gone for good.
Lutz says that even though he thinks the G8 is “too good to waste”, GM can’t make a valid financial case for keeping the car. Apparently, the combination of shrinking car sales, tightened budgets, and increasingly stringent fuel-economy regulations stacked the cards against rebadging the Pontiac as a Chevy.
Luckily, Lutz asserts that GM will continue to build rear-drive products, and states that the Australian team responsible for the G8 - and its predecessor, the unloved GTO - will be tapped again in the future.
