Nissan Driving Pleasure

Throw away that Christmas tree-shaped air freshener: Nissan has a better idea.
Well, maybe it’s a better idea.
Demonstrated just prior to the current Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan’s “Forest Air” system adds aroma to the car’s air-conditioning system. The idea is that forest fragrances are relaxing to drivers, especially those contending with the cut-and-thrust of daily commuting - particularly in Tokyo. Thus the HVAC engineers have come up with a system that will send a mixture of “leaf scent and fragrant wood” aroma to the car’s cabin. The system also includes a grape-seed filter and high-density ionization, to eliminate odors, and it can be switched off.
We tried the system, and found it to be not unpleasant, but Nissan product planners think it’s an idea whose time has not yet come for the U.S. market. (Infiniti will offer an unscented version of the system in the 2011 M, with gentle breezes and controlled humidity.) We had to agree with that, but it could be just a matter of having the right aroma. Maybe leaf scent and fragrant wood won’t work for everyone. So we offered a can’t-miss alternative: bacon.
