Hyundai Genesis Nav System

2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe at Cedar Point

What’s the best way to test a new navigation system? Drive somewhere, of course. The nav system in question was the new unit installed in the 2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe, and our destination turned out to be Cedar Point, the roller-coaster mecca in Sandusky, Ohio.

2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe navigationThe Genesis coupe’s nav system differs from the one offered in the sedan. Whereas the four-door’s system is controlled via a rotary dial and hard buttons, the coupe’s is largely touch-screen-operated. The easy-to-use system features traffic rerouting, a turn-by-turn list, and a bright display with clear maps. It also accepts voice commands for navigation and radio control. One highlight is the function that displays the selected route along with a mileage breakdown by highway, toll road, and ferry. The nav is packaged with a 10-speaker Infinity sound system and features Bluetooth audio streaming as well as iPod, USB, and auxiliary inputs. It’s XM-capable and includes a 90-day trial that also provides real-time traffic info. The nav system is available on V-6-powered Grand Touring and Track models ($1000), as well as the four-cylinder 2.0T Premium with automatic transmission ($1250, includes automatic climate control).

Travel tip: Go to Cedar Point on a fall evening. The park is much less crowded, allowing you to practically walk onto each ride without waiting, and the weather is, of course, much cooler. Plus, there are fewer shirtless patrons.

Hyundai has also added a Multi-Gauge information display to 2010 Genesis coupes. In this case, multi means two (or three if you include the clock): instantaneous readouts for engine torque and fuel economy on the screen atop the center stack. While current fuel economy is a nice stat to keep an eye on, we don’t know how helpful torque is going to be to drivers. We suggested that a boost gauge would be of more use on the four-cylinder turbo models. The gauges are not reconfigurable at this point.
