2010 Ford Mustang convertible

The convertible version of America’s newest sweetheart. Easily the most sun-hungry automobile in Ford’s 2010 lineup, the Mustang GT Convertible is right at home in SoCal, where we first sampled it. Indeed, with myriad improvements made across the 2010 Mustang range, the open-top version and sunny SoCal still represent a match made in muscle-car heaven.

We like the new Mustang GT, which has undergone a dramatic freshening for 2010, including all-new body panels, larger wheel/tire packages, upgraded interior materials, and added available content, including color-keyed leather and navigation. The GT model comes with an enhanced 4.6-liter V-8, tuned to match last year’s Bullitt with 315 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.

The 3400-pound Mustang GT coupe is pretty fast: 5.1 seconds to 60 mph and a 13.7-second quarter-mile at 104 mph. We couldn’t strap equipment to it to see how close the heavier convertible gets to those figures, but it certainly didn’t feel that quick from stoplight to stoplight on Sunset Boulevard. However, anything it gives up to the coupe in acceleration is more than made up in sound, especially with the top down, with nothing but air between those fat exhaust tips and the driver’s ears. The metal cue-ball shifter of the manual transmission was a short-throw joy to row, though it only has five tall speeds and is pining for a sixth.

However, rowing the wheel from side to side, say, in the Malibu Hills, reveals a surprisingly nimble dancer beneath its musclebound sheetmetal. Ford has done a lovely job taming the Mustang’s live-axle rear end, which no longer shakes the car to pieces but still loves to step out upon provocation. Steering is light and accompanied by precision that no muscle car in the past could ever offer.

If there’s one problem with driving a GT Mustang convertible in Southern California, it’s that Mustang convertibles are as common as Honda Accords, especially in touristy Hollywood, so hardly anyone notices you. Except, that is, drivers of heavier, but more powerful Dodge Challengers R/Ts and SS Chevy Camaros, who seem to love chasing down all forms of Mustangs to bait 60s-esque stoplight drag races. Perhaps they read our comparison, wherein we hustled the Camaro SS to 60 in 4.8 seconds and the Challenger R/T to the same speed in 5.1. Then again, if they read further, they’d see that the Mustang GT won that comparison in spite of its power deficiency. Besides, although I probably couldn’t take them down, I would have more fun, since neither competitor is offered as a ragtop - yet.

At $36,845 to start and $38,530 as tested, the Mustang convertible I was driving wasn’t cheap, but it was loads of fun, and especially here in SoCal, it felt right at home. It’s currently available pretty much everywhere. But if you can’t find one, there are plenty here in L.A.
