Public Option

Posted August 22, 2009

Public option is the buzz word now. President Obama has been trying to defend his public option government run insurance program even through heated town hall meetings.

Most polls are showing that America is not in favor of a government ran health insurance program and feel it is just the first step to socialized health care. In addition most Americans don’t feel like we are in the financial position to pay for it. Supporters of the public option say that it will eventually cut all health care costs.

"It’s not good enough that it’s just paid for; it actually has to start driving long-term costs down"

Posted August 13, 2009

This quote by Sen. Mark Warner echoes what America is feeling. Obama is busy with town hall meetings trying to rally support for his health care reform bill. One of the main points he has been emphasizing is the inclusion of people with pre-existing conditions when purchasing health insurance. Unfortunately for Obama this is not enough for Americans to stand behind his health care reform bill.

With an economy that most Americans feel is still depressed and the huge budget deficit that Americans realize makes us indebted to other countries, most are wanting more information on how Obama’s health care reform bill is really going to keep health care costs down and feel they still have not received a straight answer.

Will the Democrats Invoke Reconciliation?

Posted August 4, 2009

Obama is on his way to Elkhart, IN to talk about the Economy, including health care reform. He needs the support of the people since many Americans are still unsure of the quick changes that the government may enact with the health care reform legislation.

Democrats are determined to get a bill on Obama’s desk by the year end and as a last resort they are willing to invoke reconciliation. This means they can stop Republicans from blocking the bill. But, if they choose this route, they need at least 60 votes, otherwise the Republicans can still raise objections to things in the proposal that do not line up with cutting spending. And, the problem with this, is that although Democrats do have 60 votes, two senators, Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts and Robert Byrd of West Virginia, are ill and may not make the vote. Many Democrats do agree they don’t want to go the reconciliation route and it would only be a last resort.

Federally Funded Abortions the Next Hurdle in the Obama Health care Reform Plan

Posted July 27, 2009

President Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both stated that an August deadline to pass some version of a health care reform bill may not be feasible. So lawmakers will be back in September hashing out how to make a government ran health care option. And it looks like in September they may have to start talking about Abortion.

Talking about Abortion during the Obama administration has pretty much been a no-no. Obama has walked far, far around any talk about abortion either way. But, now that conservative Democrats have said they will not support a health care reform bill that does not exclusively prohibit abortion to be funded by taxpayers, be prepared to hear some abortion talk in September when lawmakers will be back from vacation to try and get a health care reform package passed.

Obama Pushing Health care Reform Before August Break

Posted July 21, 2009

Although Obama is still pushing for a health care reform proposal to be available before the August break, he is finally making hints that getting the health care reform proposal done before the August break may not be feasible. But, with Obama’s health care approval rating falling, now below 50%, some feel if there is not a proposal on the table before the August break then like Clinton, Obama’s health care proposal may too be a failure.

This morning on the Today Show, Obama did seem to sway to the agreement that he would support a tax on the rich to pay for health care reform even when he was asked if he felt that was punishing the rich. He disagreed that it was a punishment and said that as a community people who have more should help others who don’t.

Republicans and Conservative Democrats feel Obama’s health care reform will cause worse economic problems and don’t want to see a plan ready before the August break. They feel it will hurt small businesses, cause a loss in jobs and produce a health care system of "rationed" care.

Mandated Health Insurance

Posted July 16, 2009

Yesterday one version of a health care reform bill was passed. A main idea in this version is mandated health insurance. Sometimes the democrats and Obama would launder the term by calling it "shared responsibility" but what they mean is that everyone would be required to have health insurance or pay a fine.

A health care reform bill that requires all citizens to purchase health insurance may get a lot of Americans tense but they do plan to give subsidies to lower income individuals and families to help them afford the mandated health insurance.
