Installing a Bumper Hatch on an RV

As a fellow RVer (you know, one who has a recreational vehicle) I bet you have had at least one near miss with your sewer hose “crawling” out of its storage place, also known as the rear bumper. That is if the rear bumper is where you store your sewer hose on your RV. Usually the cause of this escape by the sewer hose is the rubber end caps on the bumper coming loose and falling off of the bumper where the sewer hose is stored. When this happens, the sewer hose is loose and often times will scare the drivers who are following behind you. Luckily, this problem can be solved pretty easily.

To solve the problem of the escaped sewer hose, simply go to Camping World and order the bumper hatch kit. Ordering this kit from Camping World will cost $15.55 plus shipping and contains 2 tough polypropylene covers or hatches and the screws that are necessary to keep them attached to the bumper of the RV. Adding a drop of silicone to each screw before installing them would make them stay in place better, but is not included in the kit.

To install the bumper hatches, simply place the hatch on the bumper and put the screw, with or without the drop of silicone, and screw the hatch to the rear bumper of the RV. The end of the hatch with the screws will act as a hinge and will allow for the sewer hose to be taken out of the bumper where it is stored. On the other side of the bumper hatch, opposite from the side that was attached to the bumper of the RV, is a one-piece positive locking snap that will keep the hatch closed and the sewer hose from escaping when the RV is traveling down the road.

Even though installing bumper hatches is not a big, time-consuming job, it could be important just as well. This little addition to the RV bumper can save you the hassle of having to find a sewer hose after yours has escaped without your knowledge. Not a good thing if you are getting to your destination late at night. Also, those drivers who are behind you would probably appreciate it if your sewer hose does not jump out of your bumper and heads toward them as they are traveling down the road.
