Installing a 12-Volt Outlet in an RV

Installing a 12-volt outlet in an RV may not be a task that every RV owner wants to do, but there may be a time when this task is necessary. If this is the case, the 12-volt installation is not that difficult.

Gathering the necessary items makes installing a 12-volt outlet in an RV simpler. Items needed for this installation are crimpers or wire cutters, several feet of black and red 14-gauge electrical wire, an inline fuse holder and a 10 amp fuse. You will also need several Scotchlock splicing connectors, two or three ring connectors, a drill, a few screws and a hole saw that is the same size as the 12-volt receptacle body that will be installed.

After gathering the necessary materials and tools, the next step is to decide on the location for the new receptacle. Remember, putting the new 12-volt outlet close to an existing 12-volt light will make getting to the 12-volt power easier. Once the location has been decided upon it is important to make sure that there is nothing behind the wall and to make sure the power is off. If the site checks out, then use the drill and the hole saw to create a hole in the wall. Once the hole is finished, pull the wire running to the lights out of the hole a little bit and cut them. Now prepare the receptacle for installation by attaching the new red wire to the middle post and attach the other end to the fuse holder using one of the Scotchlock splicing connectors. Next attach the white wire that goes to the light to the other end of the fuse holder, again using the Scotchlock splicing connectors. After attaching the white wire to the fuse holder, attach the black wire to the 12-volt receptacle using one of the ring connectors. The other end of the black wire will then be attached to the black wire running to the light. Now the 12-volt outlet has been wired and the 10 amp fuse should be installed.
