As I was looking through my St. Petersburg Times newspaper the other day, I noticed that Honda was unveiling a brand new personal transportation vehicle. I can’t remember the name at this point, but who cares anyway? If
this is as earth shattering as the Segway™ was in 2001, I’ll probably never need to know the name; it will be drilled into my head a million times between now and the time it is released.Remember when the personal mobility craft, Segway™, first came out in 2001 and you couldn’t find a place to hide from it? Every station that you turned to had some news anchor talking about it. Every newspaper had a story on the scooter formally known as It. Heck, there was even a novel written about the escapades of the space age vehicle. Dean Kamen, the man behind the development and production of the Segway™, was everywhere that he could be talking about the new product. It wasn’t just Kamen though. Steve Jobs claimed that the Segway™ would be a bigger invention than the personal computer was. John Doerr was rumored to have said that this invention would be more important to the world than the internet. Even the greatest of the technocrats, Bill Gates himself, thought that the scooter would change the world and the way cities are designed. Could any of them have been more wrong?Since the Segway™ started sales in 2002, company records show that only about 50,000 units have been sold. 50,000? Are you kidding me? All that hype, all that publicity, all that anticipation for 50,000 sales? Have you ever heard of another product in history that got that amount of press to only get that amount of sales worldwide? Even the worst of products if given enough publicity will sell. Think Chia Pet. Does anyone else feel even a little betrayed by these moguls that talked of worldwide change only to be exposed as straw men peddling a useless product?
