How to Solder RC Cars

Soldering is an art that every electric RC’er, and some nitro RC’ers need to know, simply because a weak solder joint is only the start of any electrical problem. The skill set takes some time and practice and, as with most things, a lot of patience. But once you get it down, you’re
golden. To help you get the best solder joints possible, we put together this basic guideline on soldering principles and techniques.STEP 1One of the first things you need to do prior to soldering is preparing the surface. Whatever flat surface you’re soldering to, be it a battery end, a battery bar, a motor tab or a plug lead, use some sandpaper and rough up the surface a little. This will give the solder something to bite to. Once that is done, let’s get into pre-tinning.STEP 2.Pre-tinning is basically preparing the surface to be soldered with a thin coat of solder. The reason for this is to make the solder bond true so that you’ll have a reliable connection. During the actual soldering process, pre-tinned joints on the two parts (usually a wire and a terminal) will melt together and bond much better. To pre-tin the terminal surface, place the solder onto the part, then place the tip onto the solder. As the solder melts, feed the tip with a little more solder until you wet the surface. You want a very small layer of solder. Remember; do not apply additional pressure to the tip! That’s not going to make the solder stick any better. It will only damage the iron. If the solder isn’t taking to the surface, chances are, there’s something on the surface preventing the solder from sticking. Sand the surface a little more and try again.
