How to Replace the Timing Belt of Engine?

Replacing a Timing Belt The timing belt or cam belt governs the opening of valves in all internal combustion engines and your car must have one. If a timing belt breaks the results for the engine can be quite damaging and a timing belt that is worn out can cause the power of the engine to reduce and the fuel efficiency to decrease. So, most manufacturers recommend that a timing belt be replaced after your car has run for 60,000 miles. Replacement is not an easy job, but if you are a DIY enthusiast and have that spare time, changing can be done by you.

Preliminary steps

First of all identify the belt that your car needs and buy the necessary replacement. While you are about it also buy new gaskets the cover of the timing belt as you may need to replace them as well.

Wait for the engine to come to the ambient temperature, before you try to replace the timing belt. Better still, do it on the day you have not started your car. Disconnect the battery, especially the negative cable. While you are at it, you might as well check up the battery and see if it is in good condition.

Now check the position of the cover of the timing belt and remove all obstructions that make it difficult to reach. This may vary from car to car, but most likely that you would have to remove the air intake assembly and the pulley on the water pump. Remove any other accessories that are obstructing your field of work.

Check if your car comes with a distributor cap and remove it. If your car does not have a distributor cap you would require setting the sensor for the cam position to the top dead center (TDC).

Changing the timing belt

Locate the bolt on the crankshaft and use a wrench to rotate the engine. Continue rotating till the timing mark that is there on the pulley is in line with the mark that is there on the scale that says ‘0′. Now you can undo cover of the timing belt. Now you need to see that the bearings on the tensioner are not loose. They may have to be replaced if they are. Now move the tensioner so that it is free of the belt. Now slide off the timing belt from its grove and remove it.
