How to Change a Flat Tire

A Informative Instructional on a Safe, Efficient Way to Change a Flat TireIn these modern times one may never think they are apt to find themselves alone on the side of a dark road or lonely highway with a flat tire. With gadgets from cellular phones to OnStar to Triple A, many of us (author included) have developed a false sense of readiness and security. The false fantasy is far much cozier than the reality that someday, we just might end up alone on some dark, winding, lonely road with a flat tire and no cell phone reception (or cell phone).

In the fall of 2000, at 1:22 a.m., I found myself on the side (of all places) of the road along Highway 50 in between Fallon and Fernley, Nevada with a flat tire. It was only then that I realized why they called that highway the “Loneliest Highway in America.” For 45 minutes, I sat inside my cold, lopsided Dodge Intrepid with tears in my eyes. No a soul drove by that car during those 45 minutes. I never saw a State Trooper, Sheriff’s Deputy, drunk driver, moose, horse or ghost drove by. My frustration gave way to panic as I tried to get cell phone reception to no avail. Finally, I got out of the car and began changing the flat.

It is always best to be prepared for the worst, but picturing and hoping for the best. To ensure that you don’t end up like me, I decided to prepare a how-to on changing a flat tire by yourself…with God as your co-pilot.

Start by clearing out that bulging glove compartment and toss the unpaid parking tickets, napkins, unnecessary papers, mini-books, and air freshener and perfume bottles. Replace them with your car manual; tire tool packet, thick gloves and a rosary (because you’ll need to say one in the event you get a flat and have to go solo changing it).

This instructional will tell you what you need to have in your car just in case you of a road emergency such as a flat tire. You’ll likely feel much better knowing your prepared for a road emergency.

Manly Tools You’ll Need:

• Spare Tire (of course)

• Vehicle Manual

• car Jack

• Thick hand gloves

• Lug wrench

• Flashlight

• Flameless road flares and AAA batteries

• Rags

• Hand warmers (in case it’s winter)
