How to Avoid Having a Car Broken Into?
Grand theft auto is one of the most common crimes and everyone will unfortunately experience having their car broken in to at some point. While this can be a minor annoyance it can also be fairly distressing and can be expensive even when claiming on car insurance or auto insurance if you own a truck or van.
How to Avoid Having Your car Broken Into
Often if your car is broken into the car itself won’t be stolen, and you may find that they instead just steal some of the contents such as a laptop or satellite navigation system. Other times your car may be taken for a joy ride and you could find your car never turns up or is completely written off when it does.
It’s important then to take precautions to avoid your car getting broken into and to avoid unnecessary claims on your car or auto insurance. Most of these safe-guards are fairly common sense though it can be easy to overlook them if you’re stressed or in a hurry. For instance the first and most important thing to do is to make sure you lock your car before you leave it. Remember that not all cars have internal locking while others require the driver’s seat door to be locked from the outside.
You can also take extra measures to make sure that your car is locked more securely than it would be with just the keys by buying additional accessories such as a car alarm or a steering lock. Either or both of these will work well as they should act as just enough of a deterrent to encourage potential thieves to move on to easier prey. Note that a steering lock on its own won’t stop thieves who are only looking to steal the contents of your car however as it only locks the steering wheel. A car alarm on the other hand will draw attention to the crime and will alert you to it if you’re nearby.
Parking your car near other cars then is a good strategy as it means a thief will likely see something easier or more valuable nearby. At the very least it will reduce the odds of them targeting your vehicle and will mean that there will be more people nearby. Another simple tip is to hide anything valuable that you might have inside your car by putting it in the glove compartment, under the seats or under a cloth. Even if it only looks valuable that could be enough to get your car broken in to. Another one to watch out for is the ring that a sat nav leaves on the windscreen which can tell thieves that your car has one inside, so make sure you remember to wipe this off.
Unfortunately no matter how careful you are, sometimes you may still get unlucky and find your car has been stolen or something has been taken. In these scenarios you can only hope that you got either fully comprehensive or at least 3rd party fire and theft on your car insurance or auto insurance.
