The Othello case measured a mere 1.2 millimeters. In that day, the goal was to manufacture the thinnest possible timepiece. It was
a race between quartz movement manufacturers, most notably Timex and the Swiss. By contrast, today it is completely different. Manufacturers responded to the market as opposed to charging to be the “first” or to be the “thinnest”. Consumers decided to choose a watch that matched their personality. Buyers expect all the usual features of luxury watches because watch making has evolved to offer high levels of quality and finish. The Freelancer Chronograph features a stainless steel case, an automatic winding movement with see through, screw-down case back and synthetic sapphire crystal. It also features a 42 mm case and a display with a chronograph function, the day, and the date. The 25 jewel movement in this timepiece is protected by a much thicker case. The Freelancer Chronograph’s case thickness measures 13.7 mm. That is 12.5 mm thicker than the original Othello. Granted, these are two completely different watches but the idea is that now the watch has a deeper personality. Thus the buyer of this type of watch is looking for something that matches his personality. The contemporary look of this watch is obvious and modern. The large case is an appropriate size and the polish on the watch adds just enough shine to look good but not in an outlandish fashion. In our opinion it looks great when worn with a suit and looks comfortable when worn with denim and a crew neck t-shirt.
