“The Jay Leno Show” will premiere on September 14th and the star of show’s “Green car Challenge”-not including the celebrity drivers-will be Ford’s battery-electric Focus. This example of the Focus BEV was specially developed by Ford’s hybrid and battery electric vehicle program and Ford Racing for use by celebrity guests who will compete against one another on the show.

The Focus BEV has a split battery pack, with one part in the trunk and another located where the fuel tank would be. It took Ford three weeks to build the car and another two weeks were dedicated to tuning the suspension for the racetrack duty it will see. The car is also equipped with a roll bar and five-point driver’s harness.

Unhappy with the electric-car hype GM has managed to build around its allegedly 230-mpg Chevrolet Volt, Ford hopes the Focus BEV will remind people that Ford is in the green game. “The Focus (BEV) showcases how electric vehicles can be smart, green, fast and fun.  It also illustrates Ford’s commitment to fuel efficiency and doing our part to contribute to a better world,” says Derrick Kuzak, Ford’s Global Product Development Vice President.

Ford plans to introduce a Focus BEV in 2011 in addition to at least three other electric vehicles by 2012. Ford has previously stated that production volume will be between 5000 and 10,000 units annually, but we find that hard to believe. Each electric car will be produced at a significant loss for the foreseeable future, so we expect actual sales to be extremely limited - perhaps by high prices. And don’t hold your breath for the five-point racing harness.
