Fasteners Can Be a Problem During Auto Repairs

If you do any work on your car at all, you’ll frequently be faced with the task of threading fasteners back into place (putting nuts back on bolts, screwing studs back in, replacing screws, etc.). Sometimes you will have a situation where you must run a bolt through two or more movable holes, and no matter how hard you try, it seems impossible to line the holes up so you can push the bolt through.

Many do-it-yourselfers finally result to force. If the screw is hard to start, they just twist it a little harder. If the bolt won’t go through the holes, they bang it with a hammer. This usually results in stripped threads - a real problem.

Here are some tips that can help you: Any time you’re replacing a threaded fastener, whether you’re trying to push it through a hole, or trying to thread it into place, if it won’t turn easily, or if it won’t slide through the hole easily - stop.

Remove the fastener and investigate. Generally there are three things that will prevent a threaded fastener from being tightened easily: dirt, rust, or other foreign material in the threads; threads are damaged; or you’re crossthreading it (not matching the threads up properly).

Clean dirty threads
There are a variety of ways to clean dirty threads. It doesn’t matter much which way you do it. The important thing is that it’s done.

You might, for example, coat the threads with penetrating oil or a cleaning solvent, then run a toothpick, point of a knife or other sharp object between the threads, digging out the dirt.

Or you might soak a paper towel or cloth in penetrating oil or solvent, and wipe the threads clean with that. When you’re using a towel or cloth with a male fastener, it works best if you wrap the cloth or towel around the fastener, then rotate the fastener one way or the other for several turns. The cloth or towel digs in the threads this way, and removes the dirt.

If it’s a nut that has dirty threads, stick the cloth or towel through the nut, and rotate the nut around it. This will clean the dirt away.
