Amid a covering of clouds heavy with much needed rain, Sunbury Village Council met on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Galena’s decision to forgo paying for Sunbury police protection next year will cost $70,000 to the department, a matter that council decided should be discussed in detail at next month’s finance meeting.

Sunbury Councilman Tom Hatfield said Police Chief Pat Bennett is currently doing a wonderful job cutting back on overtime, but a detailed plan for next year’s budget is necessary for members to review potential expense and revenues.

Galena Village Council earlier this summer opted to let its contract with Sunbury expire at year’s end. At that time, Galena will begin receiving safety services from the Delaware County Sheriff’s Department.

In other business, Sunbury’s council passed a motion to renew the village’s health care plan with Medical Mutual at a 5 percent increase, with anticipation to revisit other plans in January.

With a looming $400,000-$500,000 deficit clouding the village’s future, Hatfield said the village could switch to a cheaper plan with more traditional benefits. The village currently pays $20,994 monthly for Medical Mutual’s complete benefit package, according to information from the village.

Village Administrator Dave Martin announced several upcoming events for the fall:

* The 5K Memorial Run-Walk for John Scandlin will start at 9 a.m. on Sept. 5 on the Village Square. Guided tours and water stops will be set for the anticipated 100 runners, and all proceeds will benefit BW Friends Who Share.

* The village’s Fall Festival date has changed to Oct. 17 at Freedom Park. This event was a success last year and featured hay rides, a bonfire, treats and plenty of games and fun for all, officials said.

* Oct. 24 will be Make a Difference Day and volunteers are needed to help out around the community, and to provide project ideas. Last year saw 400 volunteers helping out local senior citizens, doing church work, etc. Contact Martin for more information.

In other business, Village Engineer Wes Hall announced that work on Cheshire Road will be beginning and is expected to take a couple of weeks to finish. During this time the road likely will be closed to one lane. Residents will be informed of all dates and delays.

Councilman Bob Bishop put forth a motion requiring all future village employees in all departments to submit to a physical exam and drug test, to determine their ability to perform the position. Village Solicitor David Brehm said he will look into the paperwork needed to fulfill this motion.

Hatfield announced that Mona West has resigned from her position on the joint venture agreement committee between the village and Big Walnut Schools. A new candidate is needed and must be a Sunbury resident. Contact Hatfield or Martin if interested.
