Having freshly emerged from bankruptcy, Chrysler is now following in the steps of Uncle Sam by offering consumers money toward new cars.

Beginning on July 23 - the same day as the U.S. government’s car Allowance Rebate Systems (aka Cash for Clunkers) - Chrysler’s “Double CA$H For Your Old car” program offers a choice of up to $4500 cash or 0 percent financing through GMAC for 72 months in exchange for your old car. But unlike the government’s bill, which gives consumers a $3500 or $4500 voucher for their obsolete ride, Chrysler doesn’t care how fuel-efficient or old the vehicle is.

However, as with the government’s program, Chrysler’s has its limitations. The deal is only valid toward the purchase of 2009 models - undoubtedly an effort to clean out lots in preparation for the incoming 2010s - and doesn’t include the Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Challenger, Dodge Sprinter, or any SRT models - although there are existing “bonus cash” incentives that are worth looking into.

If you have the right combination of clunker and new-car choice, Chrysler’s offer could potentially double your money. Best-case scenario, you could be eligible for $9000 in consumer cash if you qualify for the maximum vouchers from both Chrysler and the CFC bill.

The offer is scheduled to conclude on August 31, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Chrysler extend it if it’s successful.

Chrysler 300/300C and Town & Country; Dodge Charger, Journey, Grand caravan, and Light Duty Ram.

$3500 Customer Cash ONLY
Chrysler Sebring convertible; Jeep Patriot, Compass, and Liberty; and Dodge Caliber, Dakota, and Nitro.
