Do You Need Medical Payments Coverage?
Medical Payments Coverage, also called MedPay, is an optional component of car insurance in some states. If your state is a No-Fault state, you will be required to purchase either Medical Payments Coverage or Personal Injury Protection (where available).
What is Medical Payments Coverage?
Medical Payments Coverage cover the costs associated with medical treatment needed due to a car accident. MedPay covers the passengers in your car, as well as covering you while you are a passenger in someone else’s cover. Medical Payments Coverage may cover the cost of emergency medical care including ambulance transportation, emergency room expenses, in-patient hospital stays, X-rays and lab tests, as well as follow-up medical visits to a doctor.
Medical Payments coverage may also cover medical expenses not covered by Personal Injury Protection (PIP). Not all states offer PIP, and in others, it’s a required form of auto insurance coverage.
Medical Payments Coverage vs. Personal Injury Protection
Some states required Personal Injury Protection but not Medical Payments Coverage. Personal Injury Protection covers medical expenses for you or your passengers (specifics may vary from state to state). Personal Injury Protection offers broader coverage than Medical Payments Coverage, as it may also cover lost wages due to work missed because of injuries caused by an accident. Child care may also be covered.
Who Needs Medical Payments Coverage?
If your state does not require Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and you are underinsured or uninsured for health care, Medical Payments Coverage may be a viable option to include with your car insurance coverage. Drivers whose health insurance has high deductibles or high co-payments for many services may benefit from including Medical Payments Coverage on their auto policy.
