DIY: How to Change the Oil in Your Car

The oil is one of the most important components in your car. According to Motor Trend, the oil in your car does more than just lubricate engine parts. It also keeps the engine free of debris, and neutralizes acid and moisture to prevent rust and corrosion. Oil also absorbs
heat from the combustion process, which further prevents damage to the engine and keeps it running smoothly.Regular changes of oil keep this multi-tasking lubrication system working at its best, which prevents your engine from malfunctioning or seizing altogether. I’m lucky enough to have an ASE certified master mechanic in my home, but even if you don’t, performing an oil change is relatively easy DIY car maintenance.Oil Change Step 1: Gather SuppliesThe amount of oil your car needs, and the size wrench you’ll need for the drain plug, should be located in your owner’s manual. (Five quarts of oil should be enough for most cars.) If you don’t have the manual, ask at your local parts store for expert advice. They’ll also find you the right oil filter for your make and model. Don’t forget to pick up a set of oil filter pliers.Dress in clothes you don’t mind getting permanently dirty. Put a clean rubber mat between you and the ground for extra comfort.Oil Change Step 2: Prepare Your carPark on a level surface. Jack up the car in the front. Jacking up one side will do the trick, but lift both sides for greater stability and more head room.Locate the oil pan. It’s underneath the engine block, so check the front and center of the undercarriage. Look for a protruding metal pan that’s bolted in place, with a bolt-like plug in the middle.Place a large oil catch pan under the drain plug. Oil Change Step 3: Drain the OilUse a wrench to remove the drain plug. It it was locked tightly at the last oil change, you’ll have to give it some extra muscle to break it free.Keep your face back as you loosen the plug, as oil will begin to splash out the moment you break the seal. Once it’s loose, remove the wrench and untwist it the rest of the way by hand. Be careful not to drop it into the oil catch pan.Let the oil drain completely into the pan.Oil Change Step 4: Inspect and Replace Plug
