Computer Peripheral Review: Transcend StoreJet
Transcend’s StoreJet 25M makes the hefty claim of meeting U.S. military drop-test standards, while toting a Red Dot Design award at the same time.
The StoreJet 25M may seem like an ordinary external hard drive for most people; even bland-looking, considering it is devoid of any glossy surface unlike many of the more ‘trendy’ and colorful portable hard drives that have been coming out as of late. But for those not too concerned about appearances, the drive’s simple color scheme of orange, black and charcoal grey and its alternate red is somewhat reminiscent of tools that are similarly color-coded to accentuate their utilitarian purpose and to make them easy to find. Its physical countermeasures consist of two layers; first is the anti-slip soft silicon and the rugged plastic casing. The silicon layer absorbs and distributes the force of an impact, thereby reducing the force that the rigid casing has to withstand.
The second layer is found within; a complete array of suspension dampeners that will absorb whatever force is left that has not been absorbed by the drive’s outer defenses.
Aside from an external protection system short of a Kevlar vest, the StoreJet 25M comes pre-installed with the StoreJet Elite backup software which is accessible by browsing the drive. The software also works hand-in-hand with the drive’s nifty OneTouch Auto-backup button. Of course, what content or folders will be backed up will have to first be set in the program menu and is not limited to the My Documents folder, which brings us to the flexibility and convenience of the pre-installed software. Aside from the usual data encryption and synchronization, e-mail content can be backed up into the drive via the StoreJet Elite interface. This removes the hassle of actually having to look for the folder where, Microsoft Outlook, for example, stores the e-mail content for profiles using the program. Simply select the appropriate profile from the interface and viola!, the program synchronizes and safely backs up all downloaded e-mails into the drive.
