Chevrolet Camaro Orlando, Aveo and Malibu
More news from GM’s future-product showcase today. Again, no pictures to share, so you’ll have to read our descriptions for now. One product that doesn’t take much imagination to picture is the Camaro convertible, which is scheduled to launch in the second quarter of 2011, likely as a 2012 model. It’s going to have a cloth top and look like the concept pictured above, which means you already want one. We got a look at the next-gen Aveo, which actually looks pretty nice. The form is very boxy, even boxier than the current model, with an upright rear end and cool character lines along the sides. The front end has four distinct and separate headlights, the rear door handles are hidden near the rear windows, and there are very prominent fender flares sitting above the wheels which have been pushed way out. Chevy also showed the production version of the Orlando, which looks nearly identical to the show car save for its extended length; the production Orlando’s size is more in line with that of the Mazda 5. The Malibu is due for a redesign in 2012, likely as a 2013 model. GM tells us the new ‘Bu was styled to be reminiscent of a European sports sedan, and it was easy for us to tell which one they were tracing: the BMW 5-series. The trunk has a two-step-up look like the Bimmer and the hood’s pronounced ridge that gets taller in the middle also evokes the 5er. The C-pillar and rear fender get the muscular look of Chevy’s Camaro. An impressive-looking fake-leather-wrapped dash nearly fooled us, but the absence of soft-close doors reminded us it isn’t a BMW.
