Colloquially known as the “Evo,” one can’t help but receive the impression of a snorting, growling, angry monster when staring at the car.
Trims: The car comes in two different trims, the GSR and the MR. The GSR has a 5-speed manual gearbox and has a MSRP of $33,000. The MR, which stands for “Mitsubishi Racing,” is the more refined of the two with a 6-speed paddle shift gearbox and a MSRP of $38,000. The differences from the old evolution models are a wider sculpted fender, a lower-front air dam, and a diffuser under the back of the car.
Interior: The dashboard and recaro racing seats give the driver a true cockpit feel. The rear seats can easily accommodate the family comfortably with adequate leg room, certainly better than competing sedans such as the BMW M series. From a luxury point of view, much of the interior feels cheap, however.
Acceleration: With a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 4.9 seconds, the vehicle shows where it truly shines: performance. The noise factor and blurring vision gives a visceral sensation when driving this car. However, the 5-speed trim of the car makes the car quite too loud. On a long freeway drive, one could hear the motor and begin thinking “Why is there no 6th gear?”
Handling: This car’s computer enhancements are phenomenal. The ability to turn an amateur driver into a track champion is Mitsubishi’s genius. The ACD (Active Center Differential) shifts more power to the front or back wheels when necessary. The newly-introduced in the US, AYD (Active Yaw Control) gives power to the individual wheels to cleanly navigate through a turn. The ASD (Active Stability Control) is the car’s ability to stabilize and control the vehicle in a scenario of over-steer or under-steer. The vehicle does not merely handle well, it bends the earth to its will. Track drivers often take unnecessary risks because of how much they trust the Evolution’s error correction.
