Look at a lot of Ford’s North American products and you’ll see they’re underpinned by the same architecture: the old Volvo/Ford corporate P80 platform that dates back to the previous-generation Volvo S80. Now, the current S80 is hardly among our favorite vehicles, let alone the old one, so it’s no surprise that the Ford Flex, Taurus, Lincoln MKS, and Lincoln MKT that ride on its bones are a bit dull to drive.

For one thing, all three vehicles feel huge, with high cowls and wide cabins. At 4100, 4300, and 4800 pounds respectively for Taurus, MKS, and Flex, none of them outfitted with the heavier twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6, they are all overweight relative to their competition. The MKT we tested, which had the twin-turbo six, came in at close to 5000 pounds.

Mass is only good in an accident. Otherwise, it impairs braking performance, handling, and acceleration, as well as fuel mileage. Based on our 10Best time with the MKS and a pair of Tauruses, Ford needs to do something with the underpinnings of these vehicles. Big on the outside, rear-seat room seems cramped compared with an Accord’s. The handling is OK, but dull, and the body motions are as ill-controlled as a Fusion’s or Accord’s are well damped.

Worse still, the Buick LaCrosse we had was more enjoyable to drive in almost every way: it rode better, steered more elegantly, and was more refined, with less road and engine noise. The automatic trannie made shifts in a more controlled, serene way. The LaCrosse is underpinned by a relatively new GM architecture, and it felt that way. At the same price (almost) as the Taurus, there was no contest: and compared with the MKS, a mere $20,000 more, it was still a win for GM.

Despite the media’s slurping at the Ford Kool-Aid fountain, we’d have to say that the Blue Oval is in mild disarray in the U.S.: its European-based cars look terrific, but the ancient architecture underpinning its U.S.-sized vehicles is past its sell-by date. Quick work from GM or Fiat/Chrysler could catch them napping over in Dearborn.
