Audi Turns 100 and Cool Metal
Audi celebrated 100 years of German engineering recently, and the event guest list read like a who’s who of Deutschland politics, with everyone from Prime Ministers of the country’s various federal-states to Chancellor Angela Merkel herself in attendance. The company even brought out an entire symphony orchestra to serenade its guests. But we could care less about who was there and what music was playing. We came for the cars - Audi has churned out some pretty cool metal over the years. Here are six notable cars that were rolled out at Audi’s 100th birthday bash.
Few cars on this planet, much less at the birthday party, are any cooler. The ‘37 Auto Union V16 Type C Streamline was built with the sole purpose of taking the world land-speed record, and in 1937 Bernd Rosemeyer gave it a shot. On a public road. The car managed 248 mph.
In the world of WRC, you can’t say “Group B” without immediately thinking of Audi’s wicked Sport Quattro Rally. The cars were propelled by bat-guano crazy 2.1-liter five-cylinder engines with 450 hp. With a heady 518 hp kicking at all four wheels, the beefed-up supercar will launch to 60 mph in under 3.9 seconds. While critics will say it’s a watered-down Lamborghini Gallardo, we say it’s sex on wheels.
What the R8 5.2 FSI is to speed, the 225 Front Special Roadster is to class. Only two Front Special Roadsters were ever created, and of those two, exactly none survive today. The mighty R8’s little brother, the TT RS, was also on hand to show off its Cayman S-fighting hips. The 332-hp all-wheel driver gets its power from a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-five-cylinder engine. It’s the epitome of Audi’s forbidden fruit here in the states, and its naked presence in the engine bay harkens back to the days of unregulated, maddening turbocharged five-cylinder rally cars from Ingolstadt.
