ABI offers flooding advice

Following the recent unprecedented levels of rainfall in Cumbria and the ensuing flooding, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has issued guidance to those who have been affected.

The ABI advises that household and business insurers cover flood damage and should be contacted as quickly as possible.

Many insurers operate a round-the-clock helpline, which can offer assistance inspecting damage and arranging for repairs.

The ABI also advocates carrying out temporary repairs if these will prevent any further damage, or worsening of present damage, and to keep receipts for later claims.

Temporary accommodation will also be covered, for a limited time, and comprehensive motor insurance should protect flood-damaged vehicles.

In addition, homeowners are advised to disinfect floors and furnishings, leave doors and windows open where possible and to keep the home heated (although water and electricity should only be used once the green light to do so has been given by the authorities).

Finally, the ABI warns against rushing to redecorate as homes can take a long time to dry out and urges homeowners not to put themselves at risk.

Earlier the organisation had estimated the cost of the flooding at some Ј100m and Nick Starling, director of General Insurance and Health, has highlighted recent events as proof of the importance of flood insurance.
