We get a practical E-class, but we want more engines. The Mercedes-Benz E-class range is almost complete: at the Frankfurt auto show next month, a station wagon - traditionally called the T (for “Touring”) model in Europe - joins the sedan and the coupe as the third and final model. We hesitate to speak of a platform because while the E-class coupe shares styling cues with the sedan, it’s largely based on the smaller, cheaper C-class. On the other hand, the final variations of the real E-class platform are still to come in the form of a sleek new CLS sedan, and possibly a CLS wagon as well. Confusing as Mercedes’ platform strategy may be, the E-class wagon is an unsurprising addition to the lineup. At the 1977 Frankfurt show, the carmaker added the first T model to its W123 sedan, then the standard Mercedes and the spiritual predecessor of the E-class. It was costly but luxuriously finished, and it set the tone for all T models to come: extremely spacious but sedan-like in touch and feel, and available with all the goodies you can have in the four-door models.
