You say you want a (design) revolution? Well, too bad.

The launch of the redesigned 2011 Audi A8 has been pushed back to the Detroit auto show next January, but the car is ready, and these shots capture the third-generation A8 virtually undisguised. And despite Audi’s exclamations that the luxo-cruiser will usher in a new era in design for the company, the car certainly represents no revolution. Think big A4, not 2010 Jaguar XJ.

Like the current A4, the A8 has a sharp shoulder line that drops down towards the rear. It is mirrored by a second, similarly executed line on the lower doors that leads to the rear bumper. The profile of the greenhouse keeps its bubbly shape, an Audi and VW trademark that goes back to the 1990s and has been copied by virtually the entire industry.

The headlights have a futuristic, very technical contour, with no hint of the popular (and overused) slanted look. In character with Audi’s brand image, the lighting units look high-tech inside as well, with both xenon and LED elements. Their shape displays a distinct styling language, unlike the taillights, which, while tastefully executed with the latest LED technology, still closely resemble those of the A4 and A5.
