Ford’s plan for its brands involved putting vast sums of money into
divisions such as Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Austin Martin, and even
Merkur (remember what a hit the Merkur was? Oh boy, hopefully you
did not buy one!). Lincoln usually received a rebadged job and an

occasional Town car update.

Now, however, with these brands being dead, sold, or on the to be
sold list, Ford is finally focusing on its Lincoln division. The Lincoln
MKT does a good job of showing the auto maker’s commitment to again
compete for luxury car buyers. This brings us to the MKT crossover,
the most credible Lincoln of recent memory.

The MKT is built on the same platform as the Ford Flex. However,
it forgoes the Flex’s hip look for a bold interpretation of the design
theme that Lincoln started with the MKR concept of 2007.

Whether the MKT is beautiful is open to the beholder’s eye. However,
it integrates classic Lincoln cues with a modern look that could indeed
attract attention.

On the inside, the MKT is conversational and its stitched dash, real
walnut trim, and panoramic sunroof provide a an expansive as well
as an enjoyable driving environment. Small negatives that keep it
off Audi’s turf include somewhat flimsy door armrest pulls, and
cheap feeling radio and air conditioning controls (likely from the
general Ford parts bin).

Ford has been specializing in technology as of late, and the MKT
is able to park itself. The driver needs to just control the throttle,
and the technology does the rest!

The real technology centerpiece, however, is the MKT’s EcoBost
engine. The base car is equipped with a direct-injected 3.7-liter V6
making out 268 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque. The EcoBost is a
direct-injected twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 pumping out an impressive
355 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque.

The twin-turbo engine lives up to its hype in that it moves the 4924 lb.
all-wheel drive MKT with better acceleration that the Buick Enclave
and even out gunning the V8 powered Audi Q7. All the while, however,
it returns fuel mileage equal to the Enclave and bettering the Acura
MDX.
